The film stars Jason Statham, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, 2003 Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain and Willem Dafoe. It tells the story of a research crew that makes an epic discovery at the bottom of the Mariana Trench only to experience a series of mishaps that forces them to fight for survival. Pictures and is a standalone sequel to 2013's "The Meg", which starred Jason Statham and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and started production in 2017 and began filming in February 2018. In the near future, an oil rig derails into the Mariana Trench, stranding its crew. A research team aboard the rig’s deep-diving submersible vessel "Vastar" mount a rescue effort, but run into difficulties as they attempt to return to the surface. The challenge soon turns into an ordeal as they encounter a mysterious sea monster that threatens all life on Earth. The Meg was originally due to be released on December 13, 2018. However, on July 26, 2017, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that the movie would be moved to a release date sometime in 2018 to avoid competition with fellow shark movie "". The film was set to be directed by Jon Turteltaub, with a script written by Dean Georgaris. On February 8, 2018, it was announced that Jason Statham would star as the main character Ben Gardner. On February 15, 2018 it was confirmed that Rainn Wilson had been cast as well as actress Ruby Rose as Lindsey Gardner. Jessica Chastain was confirmed as a cast member on February 15, 2018. It was also confirmed that Cliff Curtis and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson had been cast. It was confirmed on February 22, 2018 that Winston Chao had been added to the cast and Orange Is The New Black actor and UFC fighter Paige VanZant would make her acting debut in the film. On March 27, 2018 it was rumored that Dylan O’Brien will star in The Meg, though it has yet to be confirmed. On March 28, 2018 director Jon Turteltaub shared a picture on Twitter of an underwater set for The Meg (2018). On April 10, 2018, it was revealed that the "Vastar" set had been built for The Meg (2018). On June 28, 2018 it was announced that the film would be released on August 10, 2018. On July 8, 2018 at 4:32 p.m., Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara stated in a focus group interview with financial analysts that The Meg is currently ahead of its production schedule and is on track for a summer release in 2019.
